The Royal Society of Edinburgh has formed a collaboration with Glasgow School of Art (GSA) that led to the Ways of Seeing Invisible Illness Crossover project which explores more tangible ways of understanding people’s experiences of living and working with invisible conditions. This was a commissioned work to create a short film capturing the experiences of people with non-visible conditions. Each experience provides insight of life with these unseen conditions and how stigma or empathy can manifest in different situations. This revealed how a lack of wider understanding creates challenges in work and life, and what factors can bring about positive change in building a caring and inclusive society.

The Crossover Workshop was a collaboration between the In­novation School at The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and the Bio­chemical Society to explore the potential for exchanges between design and biochemical sciences. It focused on sharing discipli­nary expertise and perspectives through a series of design activ­ities and provocative discussions in order to prompt opportunities for future collaborations.

For Future Experiences, BDes Product Design students were asked to consider the changing relationship between Sustainable Development and the Global South. Working with experts from the Sustainable Futures in Africa Network (the project’s partner), the students explored what might happen in a global landscape ten years from now, where Sustainable Development has evolved to the extent that new forms of work transform how people engage, learn and interact with each other. An exhibition at The Lighthouse in January 2020 included the products, services and experiences designed for the people who might live and work within these future contexts. https://www.gsainnovationschool.co.uk/programme/productdesign

Winter School brings together students and faculty from leading institutions around the world for a seasonal event at the Innovation School’s Highlands campus in Forres. The programme includes lectures, workshops and networking opportunities, all based around a theme that is relevant to the citizens and businesses of the Highlands and Islands. Participants engage in collaborative working that spans different cultures, languages and disciplines, gaining an insight into what a career in design as a global activity looks like.
